Rio De Janeiro… one of the Fire Pits.
Captain Steel arrive for his mission to enter the fire pit via the Red Torpedo (a craft built to hopefully withstand the heat of the Fire Pit.
The World Council are not impressed that Commander Khan has chosen this time, as they are about to go to war with Dherain, to use Captain Steel for what seems to basically be a recon mission.
Commander Khan explains there have been strange happening for the last 2 weeks around the Pits and that there is a chance that they will be used by Steppenwolf. Terry SLoan may have created the Fire Pits, he used Apokolips technology to do so. So there is a chance they can be used by someone from Apokolips, so they need to be investigated.
Commander Khan then goes on to explain Captain Steels origin, from cripple boy named Hank Heywood Jr., so his mad scientist father fusing metals to his DNA to save his life and in the process gained him super strength, elasticity in him metallic parts and a strange ability to control metal machinery with a thought. Apokolips learned of his father research just as he was about to hand it over to the World Army. Steel fought off the attack, but in his panic his father destroyed all the research and killed himself so Apokolips would never gain his research.
Steel enters the fire pit via the Red Torpedo. He was meant to return after 24hrs. 36 hrs later Captain Steel emerges from the pit on foot. Severely injured, burnt in places from the art looks like he’s lost his left arm. He exclaims as he clears the Fire Pit: “The Red Lantern! We Have to save the world from her! Protect the Earth. If she ever gets out– –Our planet Dies!”
So HawkGirl is still investigated Sam’s death when she is attacked by genetically enhanced Apokorats, big enough to ride, with men with Apokolips tech weapons firing on her. She takes down one so she can question him after the fight, and as she goes to attack who she believes are the last 2 a forth rider comes in behind he and as he goes to fire on her he’s hit with a Batarang to the neck, that then explodes. The the rest of the riders are hit the same, all being killed.
Batman then tells her to keep digging and that Kanto, the assassin of Apokolips is involved… then he disappears in the smoke.
Hawkgirl is left wonder did she just see Batman and how is that possible and what the hell was Sam involved in.
So how dirty are Sam’s hands, that’s my question. Was he infiltrating the ‘ring’ so to speak, or was he a part of it. So Red Lantern hey. She sounds like real bad news, and living in a Fire Pit, even worse news. Is she the reason that Fire Pit is not as dangerous as the others around the world?
It was nice to learn Steel origin in this issue, and his comment on how he doesn’t care about anything he does, he just does it cause what else is there to do was interesting. Although after encountering the Red Lantern his tune seems different.
