A flashback issue
Martian Manhunter (J’onn J’onzz) considers his role on earth with the JLA in the Watch Tower. Later in Death Valley he continues this train of thought.
So he the Manhunter hunts. Tokyo, Japan is his next stop. He disguises himself as Detective Yamada to get information on the “Mars” cult members the recent murder of their leader. A death that included carving the word Thoth into his body.
John visits the crime scene and finds little clues. He continues on to visiting the minds of all the registered cult members. Then he finds a dead member. The cult believes Martians live among them, secretly influencing world affairs. And Thoth is a killer, he must be found. Thoth is an alien that moves between bodies. Police arrive at the site of the dead cult member. Turns out he’d called the police just before his death.
Then J’onn hears his voice in his head. Thoth, or the UnNamed as he’s now calling himself as he has forgotten his name and origin as he’s lived for so long in so many bodies. He reveals his true form by tearing his way out of one of the detectives bodies. He once claimed to be the one responsible for the death of Mar’s Martian race.
J’onn attacks but makes the mistake of entering his mind and is weakened by the the loneliness and anger and fear and bile and barbarism. He like J’onn is the last of his kind, an alien serial killer whose true body decayed thousands of years ago.
The UnNamed taunts J’onn with how he doesn’t know his true purpose, that he is a weapon made to destroy.
As the fight intensifies the UnNamed looks for a new host… an old man on the roof. J’onn wipes the man’s mind clean so the UnNamed can’t feed on him and in his weakened state J’onn attacks him and presumably destroys him. He then restores the old man’s mind.
Manhunter then returns to Death Valley in Nevada to meditate on what has occurred.
So basically this issue was a preview, precursor or advert for Martian Manhunter series. So no Rao…. guess we’ll have to wait until next issue to find out what happened to the League.
